What is Culture?
Culture means the way of life for a group of people. It can also refers to the same way that people think, the same way that people act, the same way that people listen to the same songs and same way that people do things they are sharing the same culture. so can you give what's on your mind?
On the island of Pohnpei, we have a culture and customs that were passed down from generations to generations. There are also some proverbs and beliefs that were passed down from the ancestors. But most of our customs are becoming inactive because we are adapting the Westerners' way of life. From my point of view, I can say that we the people of the Federated States of Micronesia are changing the way of life that our ancestors used to live. We adapted other countries' way of life. And our customs are changing. For example, when I was young and went to feasts to attend with my family, I observed many things. The three things that were used at feasts are sakau, pig and yam.But nowadays it seems that we are using the imported goods instead of only using pig, yam and sakau. Things are changing regarding our customs and beliefs.Money is starting to be the big issue here. Our traditional leaders are chosen because their are part of the clan that should be ruling our traditional government. But some are chosen because they gave the leaders big money to pay for their titles. This is starting to be a scary issue nowadays. I hope things like these will be corrected so that we will have nice and easy way of life like our ancestors did back then.
