Me



Hi, My name is Evangileen Fredrick.  I have three brothers and three sisters. I am the third oldest child in our family. My family and I live on an island called Mwudokalap. It is located adjacent to the Temwen island where Nan Madol is. My favorite hobby is reading books. My favorite food is fish and my favorite color is red which is the color of our municipality which is Madolenihmw. I enjoy having picnics with my family and sharing together our accomplishments and failures. I love my family because we provide for each other love, protection and guidance.We also support each other to get what we want in life. Even though we are not rich,  we are thankful to have a kind life and get to share with each other. This is a quote I created when I was in my elementary years and I know that it sticks because, it kept me trying and going and now I am a teacher and can help support my family. Here it is - I'll do everything for you. In order for me to achieve what I want, I never quit. On our island, when we go to school, we have to cross the sea to the main island. Every morning, mom would woke up early and prepared foods for us. Then after we eat, we get dressed and get on rafts or canoe to paddle to the main island. It was so hard and tiring but our dad kept us going by reminding us and enforcing us that the only key to have a better life is through education. I am thankful for that. After enduring hard times to get to school, when I got older, I never want to quit. Sometimes I got tired, but I remembered all the hardships that I've been through.I know that it was the same for my brothers and sisters. I can say that we all tried our best. I am now a teacher, my youngest sister already graduated from this college and was a valedictorian and my youngest brother is trying his best to achieve his BA degree in teacher preparation. As for my two brothers they are in the main land working and and trying to have a life out there. My oldest sister is at home helping mom since she's getting old. I know that some of you will laugh at my story. But remember we are all have our ups and downs. I would like to share my story to show all that I am proud to be me. I am proud daughter of my parents, proud sister of my siblings, and a proud girl who lives on an island. I am also a proud citizen of the Federated States of Micronesia and nothing could change that. Nothing not even gold or money will take these away from me. Most importantly, I thanked the Lord for everything.

At the far east of Pohnpei, lies a small island. It is not known to many people because its location cannot be sighted by many poeple traveling to Temwen island to visit the Nan Madol ruins. This small island although is not well known it is a very special place for me. It has a special environment  that will actually take your breath away. If you are looking for peace, I suggest that you visit this place. The island itself will comfort you and make you feel at home even if you are not from here. I know this place well even by heart. I grew up here. This island provides everything a person could even wish for. Some people would say that it seems lonely to be living on an island. But, believe me it's not true. The worst day of my life

Yesterday was the worst day for me. It started out in the morning. Since, I have class in the mornings, I woke up early and get ready to come to school.I live in Temwen, Madolenihmw and it is far from the college. So I had to get up early every morning. When I was about to leave, I found out that the tire was flat. Trying my best to replace the flat tire took me about an hour because someone came and helped me. I am not a good driver so I always leave home early so that I can make it to class. But when I fixed the tire, it already was 8:00 o'clock. I got in the car and drove to school. On my way down to COM, I met a couple, who asked me if I could drop them first at the Pohnpei hospital. You know, the woman was my aunt so as a Pohnpeian, family comes first. I picked them up and drove them to the hospital. Then I turned the car and started on my way. I was already late by then. Funeral in Pohnpei

One good example of Pohnpeian culture is funeral or "mehla" in our language. When a person dies, the family has a lot of responsibility to do. The family with some members of the community will get together to set up their place before the big crowd comes in. They will clean their place, set up the cooking place, etc. In the meantime, somebody representing the immediate family will go to the radio station and put up an announcement of the deceased. Some men will go to the king or "nahnmwarki" for invitation or "luk". This invitation goes to the nahnmwarki of the place the funeral will be held at. For example, if the funeral will be held at Madolenihmw municipality, the invitation will be given to the nahnmwarki of Madolenihmw. When the nahnmwarki gets there,the men would present the sakau or cava plant and cut the branches off and get the roots ready for bounding.
